The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) provides vital, creative, and adaptable vision and leadership for the academic enterprise at Angelo State University. The VPAA is the primary advocate for the faculty and is responsible for oversight of all academic divisions, departments, and programs and the services that support them. Working collaboratively with the other Vice Presidents, the Provost reports directly to the President and serves in his stead as requested. In the role of VPAA, the Provost is responsible for guiding academic planning, shaping the academy through recruitment, development and retention of a diverse and progressive faculty and academic staff, working with the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management to shape the student body through strategic recruitment and retention, working with the Vice President for Finance and Administration for budget development and priority-setting, and working with the Vice President for Strategy, Planning and Policy to develop academic initiatives and strategies for achieving the institutional mission. The Provost/VPAA provides open and collaborative leadership for all levels of academia in the institution, including overseeing the academic deans and department heads. The VPAA is responsible for leading collaborative academic initiatives with other component campuses of the Texas Tech University System and must be able to focus resources toward achievement of established strategic plans and development of new directions at a university where enrollment, retention and student success are top priorities. A high level of collaboration, a commitment to teamwork, and exceptional listening and communication skills are critical.
Responsibilities include:
providing general development and direction of curriculum in all academic programs;
providing leadership in student learning assessment and academic accreditation in all academic programs;
developing long-range planning and budget priorities to promote academic success;
supporting, promoting, and enhancing excellent faculty teaching, scholarship and professional development;
fostering academic excellence in departments and programs;
supervising the faculty personnel system;
promoting and providing direction for the University's research and creative endeavors;
maintaining effective channels of communication with the President, Faculty Senate, and faculty;
fostering and maintaining partnerships with the University's external communities;
promoting fiscal responsibility and accountability in academic programs
Required Qualifications
Education
Earned Ph.D or other terminal degree in an academic discipline from a regionally accredited institution.
Experience
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of:
Excellence in teaching and scholarship suitable for appointment as a tenured full professor in an academic discipline at Angelo State University;
Leadership fostering excellent teaching, strong scholarship and creative endeavor;
Success in strategic academic planning, policy development, budget planning and development, and academic personnel administration in a higher education setting;
Experience with operational leadership and management of a complex academic organization;
Success in leading accreditation processes;
Commitment to the principles of diversity, fairness and public service;
Experience fostering partnerships between a university and the region it serves.
Understanding of current issues and future directions in higher education.
Preferred Qualities Demonstrated ability to make difficult decisions in a timely manner and to motivate various segments affected by the decision toward a definitive goal.
Strong interpersonal and critical problem-solving skills.
Ability to represent the university locally, regionally, and nationally.
Experience in developing progressive and entrepreneurial academic opportunities for faculty and students.
