Job Details The University of Virginia's College at Wise is a public, liberal arts, four-year branch of the University of Virginia. The college currently enrolls 2,015 undergraduate students and is located in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia. In recent years, the College has dramatically expanded its academic and student life facilities and obtained significant private and public funding.

The Provost is the chief academic officer of the College. As the chief academic officer, the Provost is responsible for the planning, approval, and assessment of all academic policies and programs, as well as budgeting for those programs. The Provost participates in policy development as a member of the Chancellor's administration, representing and promoting the academic program to external, as well as internal constituencies. The Provost is charged with providing the academic leadership necessary through recruitment, development, and evaluation of faculty and academic support personnel to realize the College's commitment to the highest standards of excellence in teaching, scholarship, creative activity, and service. In accordance with the College's primary mission, it would be desirable for the successful candidate to teach a course in his or her discipline as often as circumstances permit. The Provost reports directly to the Chancellor.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in a field of study appropriate to a liberal arts college and a record of teaching and scholarship that would merit appointment as a tenured full professor at the College; demonstrated competence in strategic planning, budget administration, performance management, and assessment; strong interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to the principles and practices of collegial governance and consensus-building; an ability to lead the development of new approaches for the most effective use of educational technology; demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to develop a shared academic vision through a collaborative process; success in administrative positions of increasing responsibility; a strong commitment to diversity and student success; and, a high level of personal integrity and a good sense of humor.
